Coastal Alabama First Time Enrolled Non-Traditional Students Scholarship (CAFTENT)

Coastal Alabama Community College recognizes the financial barriers that first-time non-traditional students face when trying to pursue an education. Mrs. Amy Wright Rowell, Director of Financial Aid, was an advocate for all students but especially for non-traditional students. Being a non-traditional student herself she recognized all the difficulties and frustrations that students can have. For many years Mrs. Rowell sought to have a scholarship for non-traditional students. The CAFTENT is a result of her hard work and dedication, not only to Coastal Alabama Community College but to all of our students. It would be Mrs. Rowell’s hope that the students who receive the CAFTENT would be successful with their college studies and future work pursuits. Mrs. Rowell, a devoted member of our financial aid staff for 25 years, passed away in 2020. In her memory, the Coastal Alabama Scholarship Committee is pleased to offer the Coastal Alabama First Time Enrolled Non-Traditional Scholarship.

Foster Care Scholarship

Seven states have partnered with FC2S to help current and former foster youth pay for college and provide the support they need to be successful.

The John H. Chafee Foster Care Independence Act of 1999 addressed the challenges faced by young people from foster care with programs to help them transition to adulthood. Drawing from best practice of FC2S’s work with foster youth, in 2002 the Education Training Voucher (ETV) Program was designed as a federally-funded, state-administered initiative to provide funding and support for post-secondary education. Eligible students may receive grants of up to $5,000 per year for up to five years or until their 23rd birthday. ETV funds can be combined with other grants or scholarships to minimize or eliminate the need for student loans.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. By supporting undergraduate students who have high financial need, the program has been successful in supporting students who have been historically underrepresented in education abroad, including but not limited to first-generation college students, students in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students attending HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) or other minority-serving institutions, students attending community colleges, and students coming from U.S. states with less study abroad participation. https://www.gilmanscholarship.org/

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers grants of up to $5,000 to U.S. undergraduate students of high financial need participating in credit-bearing study abroad programs or international internships. Students studying a critical need language could be eligible to receive a grant of up to $8,000. The Gilman Program aims to diversify U.S. undergraduate students who study and intern abroad who might otherwise not consider these unique and valuable opportunities due to financial constraints.

To learn more about eligibility requirements, visit https://www.gilmanscholarship.org/program/eligibility/

Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad can apply for a supplemental award of up to $3,000, for a combined total of $8,000. In addition to receiving the highly competitive award, recipients of the Critical Need Language Award will be offered the opportunity to evaluate and certify their language skills acquired during their program through a recognized oral proficiency language test. This test and the results will serve as both an evaluation measure of the award and as a credential for the award recipient. To be considered for this award, you will need to submit a short supplemental essay that describes how you intend to improve your critical need language skills, your motivations for doing so, and how your study of the language relates to your academic and professional goals.

To learn more about the critical need language award, visit https://www.gilmanscholarship.org/program/critical-need-languages/
