For Gracie Conerly-Boyd, graduating from Coastal Alabama Community College represents more than earning a degree. It is a moment shaped by perseverance, service, and the unwavering support of her mother.
Balancing a full-time job, military service, and coursework, Gracie faced challenges that made this accomplishment even more meaningful.
“Graduating during this season of my life means more to me than it would have when I was a full-time student,” she shared.
Through it all, one constant remained.
Her mom.
“Although my mom found it difficult when I decided to enlist, she was and still is by my side,” Gracie said. “She has never failed to show up, support, and love me through my journey.”
Dr. Lee Conerly, Associate Dean of Instruction at Coastal Alabama, is known across campus for her leadership and dedication to students. But to Gracie, she is so much more.
“Her selflessness shows in everything she does,” she said. “At work, at home, and even in the gym. She is the kind of person who will stop what she is doing to help someone else.”
That same selflessness played a defining role in Gracie’s journey.
“I would not be getting a degree if she did not encourage me to go back to school this semester,” Gracie said. “She has been my biggest fan, and I am so proud to call her my mom and my best friend.”
Gracie credits her time in the military with shaping her into the person she is today, giving her confidence and strength.
“The military has helped me become a better person and taught me how to stand my ground,” she said. “I now have a deeper understanding of respect, especially working in a male-dominated field.”
Some of her favorite memories at Coastal are the simple moments spent with her mom on campus.
“Having lunch together whenever she was on campus was something I always looked forward to,” she said. “Watching her interact with others and seeing how much she cared made me appreciate her even more.”
Now, as graduation approaches during Mother’s Day weekend, the moment carries even greater meaning.
“I get to honor my mom not only for being an amazing mother, but also for the role she played in helping me get here,” Gracie said.
When asked to describe her mom, Gracie did not hesitate.
“Confident, proud, resilient, humble… and most importantly, Wonder Woman.”
For Gracie, this milestone is not hers alone.
It is a reflection of the love, support, and example that helped her every step of the way.
