Course Overview:
Are you writing in a journal? Do you like to put words together like a puzzle? Are you writing a story? Do you want to write, but don't know how to get started? Coastal's Creative Writing Class is for you! Students will have the opportunity to explore several different types of poetry and prose styles, as well as responding to literature, art mediums, quotes, and music. All student writers will learn about and write in multiple genres including fiction, creative nonfiction, songwriting, poetry, playwriting, and illustrated books/graphic novels. Peer reviews and sharing ideas are essential elements to this course. Students will have weekly writing assignments and will be given feedback to complete one or more stories, poems, or essays for publication. Course Topics Students will be reading, discussing, and writing in the following genres. 1. Journaling 2. Writing for Children/Illustrated Books 3. Song Lyrics 4. Poetry 5. Creative Nonfiction/Memoir 6. Fiction/Flash Fiction 7. Playwriting/Screenwriting Weekly Meetings 1. Creative Writing Assignments/Revisions Due 2. Quiz/Class Discussion on Reading Assignments 3. Lecture/Discussion on Genre/Forms of Writing/Craft 4. In-Class Writing Prompt 5. Feedback on Creative Writing
