Course Overview:
This class will focus on the antebellum era (1820-1850) of American history. Throughout this eight week period, we will examine the presidency of Andrew Jackson, discuss the social and political changes in democratic America by reading excerpts (I will provide them) from Alexis De Tocqueville’s Democracy in America, and characterize the growing conflict between commercial industrialism and agriculture as a crucial avenue which led to the Civil War. Course Outline: Week One-Three: The rise of Andrew Jackson from farmer to President, political issues that the president faced, and finally, his legacy and why this matters in the modern era. Week Four-Six: Alexis De Tocqueville's Democracy in America. Specifically, we will discuss why Americans are so restless, the democratic conditions in American society, and finally Tocqueville's warnings of America's future: Week Seven-Eight: The emergence of commercial industrialization in the North and West, the deeper isolation of the South, and the Panic of 1857.
